to get Don's thoughts on this year's Symposium.
Jazz master Don Stiernberg brings to the Mandolin Symposium his unique experience as protégé of the great Jethro Burns. Under Jethro's tutelege, Don gained the expertise to utilize the mandolin in the jazz idiom. Stiernberg produced (with David Grisman) and played rhythm guitar on Jethro's final recordings and his current mandolin releases are available from Blue Night Records and Acoustic Oasis. Don has given workshops from Tennessee to Germany and has written the jazz column for Mandolin Magazine since its' inception.
Stiernberg's mastery of jazz idioms from classic swing to gypsy jazz and bebop makes him the perfect Symposium instructor to demystify the language of jazz and enable our students to get inside unfamiliar territory. Don also shares his precious memories of Jethro Burns, both as his student and accompanist as well as his fabulous Jethro impressions, delivered like no one else can.
